Graduates of the Bachelor of Education program at Université Sainte-Anne in 2015 were quick to find employment. Less than a year has passed since graduation and over 90% of graduates were able to find full-time work.
However, the overall trend in recent years and across Canada is that the number of teachers looking for employment far exceeds the number of vacant positions. This oversupply is felt particularly in Ontario, British Columbia and Nova Scotia. In some areas, competition is fierce even for teachers who try to register on a supply list, seen as a springboard to a permanent position.
Despite this imbalance, there is an opposite trend which shows that teachers who have completed a program in French as a second language or those who are willing to work in minority communities are in demand throughout the country.
“The Halifax Regional School Board (HRSB) has hired approximately 212 French Teachers (including substitutes) over the past three years,” confirms Sheila Christie, Recruitment and Retention Advisor to HRSB, the largest school board in the Atlantic provinces.
According to Diane Racette, Executive Director of the Conseil scolaire acadien provincial, “Employment prospects in French-language schools in Nova Scotia are excellent. The CSAP has hired more than 100 new teachers over the past three years and we believe this trend will continue due to the growth of our schools. ”
Indeed, demand from these two boards far exceeds the number of graduates of the Bachelor of Education at Université Sainte-Anne. It would be wise for those who plan to pursue a teaching career to consider a French as a second language program or employment in minority communities after graduation.
Université Sainte-Anne offers a Bachelor of Education (secondary education and elementary education programs with options for French as a first or as a second language) at its five Nova Scotia campuses: Halifax, Petit-de Grat, Church Point, Saint-Joseph-du-Moine and Tusket.
