Geoff Regan, MP Halifax West

As we mark 150 years since Confederation, we can celebrate our nation’s spirit of respect and cooperation.

English and French are enshrined in law as Canada’s two official languages. However, Canadian Parents for French has recognized that linguistic duality is about more than just respect for language rights, which are very important.  But it is also represents an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of fellow Canadians’ culture and identity, and our national heritage.

I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to develop French language skills. Bilingualism is an important factor in building relationships with Parliamentarians from across the country, and is essential to my role as Speaker of the House of Commons.

Thanks to leadership and advocacy of parents and volunteers with organizations like Canadian Parents for French-Nova Scotia, students have access to French second-language education across our province. Many families are now taking advantage of the opportunity to learn French and recognize the value and enrichment of French education.

I extend my sincere congratulations to Canadian Parents for French- Nova Scotia on 40 years of successful leadership in promoting French second-language education.
