Francis was a Grade 10 French Immersion student who never really understood why his parents put him in the program. He had no idea how the language could benefit his future, especially career wise. When Francis’ teacher encouraged him to attend “The Bilingual Career Exploration Day”, he was so keen on attending.
Francis spent the day learning about such a variety of career paths that he could benefit knowing French from. He heard from many speakers that day, and quickly saw how their ability to communicate in French enhanced their career opportunities. Francis was especially delighted to hear that if you were bilingual you would be a more successful pilot, diplomat, salesperson and a doctor. These were all careers that he was considering pursuing, so he now felt inspired.
Although Francis was initially skeptical about the French Immersion program’s benefits, he left feeling very encouraged and thankful that his parents had put him in the program after all. Francis finally understood why they had made the decision for him to pursue a French education all of those years ago.
The Bilingual Career Exploration Day is an opportunity to promote work, volunteer and educational programs to high school students; a chance to inspire soon-to-be graduates and share personal experiences enhanced by bilingualism.
This event is one of Canadian Parents for French, Nova Scotia’s most successful events. Since this event started in 2006, CPF Nova Scotia has seen over 5,000 students participate. This event gives high school IB/French Immersion and French first language students (grade 10-12) the opportunity to explore career paths where French is an asset.
Our Bilingual Career Exploration Day will be held virtually this year in partnership with CPF PEI, CPF Ontario and CPF Alberta. Our event will be expanded over February and March 2021. Students and schools will have extended periods to access the keynotes, workshops, live interaction and exhibitors. Information on the event will be posted soon.
