The 38th annual Concours d’art oratoire (French public speaking contest) is fast approaching and once again, Canadian Parents for French, Nova Scotia is looking for volunteers!

Volunteer opportunities include judging, asking questions, emceeing and timekeeping.

This is a great opportunity for high school/university students to get some experience (in French) on their resumes.

Judges: Judges are required to speak and understand French; they will be assigned a category based on their bilingual capabilities. Their role is to evaluate contestants and determine a first and second place winner. They will sit on a panel with at least one other judge.

Interviewers: Interviewers are required to speak and understand French; they will be assigned to a category based on their familiarity with the French curriculum and knowledge of students’ French language abilities. Their role is to formulate and ask 2-3 questions to each student at the end of their speech. Questions must be related to speech content and appropriately test the understanding and ability of each contestant.  The interviewer is an impartial position; they will not play any role in judging or evaluating participants.

Emcees: Emcees will present in French and/or English depending on which category they are assigned.  Their role is to welcome attendees and introduce volunteers and contestants. They may need to fill-in as timekeepers if we are short on volunteers.

Timekeepers: Timekeepers are not required to speak French; they will be assigned to a specific classroom where they will record the time of each presentation and add up scores for each competitor.

The volunteer registration form will allow you to identify which role is of most interest to you. This event will take place on Saturday, May 7 2022 in the Seton Academic Centre at Mount Saint Vincent University (off of the Bedford Highway). The duration of the event will be from approximately 10:30am – 2:00 pm but, volunteers are able to leave after the winners have been determined. Refreshments will be provided, and everyone is welcome to attend the entertainment portion of the day from 1:30 pm- 2:30pm. The awards ceremony will begin at 2:30pm.

This is a provincial competition for Core French, Integrated French, Intensive French (grade 6), Early Immersion, Middle Immersion, Late Immersion and Francophone students from grades 5-12. All participants will be divided up into different age groups and categories based on the French programs at their schools. Each contestant at this event will have advanced from the regional competition held by their school board.

The success of this event is truly dependant on the support from our volunteers.
